The cold is continuing up here; the temperature right now is probably 16 degrees (the weather report says 14 but our thermometer says 16), but the pipes haven't burst and nobody has actually died of anything.
Skye is finished with finals now, but Brandon and Nick have got a bit further to go before the quarter is done.
About those annoying shut-off valves that now come standard with the intake pipes for sinks, toilets, and the like--the instructions say that you have to disconnect the pipe to reset the valve, but Nick discovered that all you have to do is turn the water off and then slowly turn it back on. Apparently he somehow activated the valve on the toilet the other day and managed to restore it without disconnecting the pipe. With that information in mind Skye, Nick, and I went upstairs to the bathroom and attempted to fire up the hot water to the sink, which has been off since installation, as nobody wanted to go through the hassle of disconnecting the pipe as we supposedly had to. We turned the water on and, sure enough, out came rather rusty-looking water from the tap, cold at first but rather rapidly lukewarm and then hot. The water took quite a while to clear up, and the automatic shut-off valve unexpected activated at one point (despite the lack of any pressure change), but we finally got the water to work. And the result is that we now have hot water in the upstairs bathroom.
Having only cold water available in the Victorian basin design was doubtless more authentic, but wow is it nice to have actual hot water again. I washed my hands in the sink just for the sheer pleasure of it.

Wow! That is cool-- to have the hot water and to be rid of the sticking valve problem. Cheers!
